Collecting compacts didn't occur to me until my gran passed away in the autumn of 2009. While I've always had a bit of a love for vintage things, it wasn't until I spotted something in her make up bag that was just alike a vintage compact I'd seen upon a website the previous afternoon. Low and behold it was the exact same Stratton! I wanted to keep it has a keep sake - little did I know my gran had several more which didn't come to light until we were tidying out her house.
Rather then seen them thrown out, I saved them. I don't know why I did - they just intrigued me. No one knew why she had them or even when or where she'd got them from. It became my little mission to find out more about these little powder compacts. Three years later and those five compacts saved from my grans are the key pieces of my collection. The next step has been to start selling compacts myself on eBay and hopefully passing on some of my knowledge in the process.
I'm a collector that goes for style, difference, owning different brand names rather then purely collecting the "perfect" compacts out there. I love to know my compacts have had a life and a story to them before they found their way into my life. Nevertheless I'm rather partial to souvenir compacts, ones with butterfly designs, mother of pearl [intimation or real] and ones that are brightly coloured. Saying that I'd never turn one down if it's going for a good price.
